What is a website heat map?
If you’ve ever watched a weather report where they show the temperatures for the day or week, you’ve seen a heat map.
The hottest parts are shown in the darkest colour, and the coolest parts are shown in a lighter colour.
They work in a really similar way on your website.
Website heat maps allow you to see the high and low interaction parts of each webpage.
The parts of the page that get minimal interaction will either look exactly like how you designed it, or will be a really light colour – usually yellow.
And then the parts that get the most interaction – clicks, mouse hovers and anything else will be shown in a darker colour.
You’ll get a visual view of what people do on your website. Cool, eh?

So hopefully by this point I’ve sold you on the benefits of website heat maps, but where and how do you add them to your own site?.
I added heat mapping to my site when I was looking to add e-commerce to my site. Knowing that I’d be attracting a different kind of user than I was used to using my site, I wanted to learn as much about their behaviour as I could in the shortest possible time.
HotJar
Enter HotJar.
I’ve been using HotJar for about 6 months now and I’ve found it to be a really useful tool.
Not only does it provide me with heat maps of user behaviour but it also records mouse movements and clicks in real time.
The dashboard gives me an overview of my most clicked links and buttons along with my most visited pages.

Heat maps and user recordings
Finding my heat maps and user session recordings is straightforward via the HotJar dashboard. To look at the heat map for a specific page all I have to do is to create a new heat map and add the URL.
Once I’ve created a heat map there’s an option to view any related recordings.
Or I can click the Recordings icon in the collapsed menu and head over to look at any other recordings.
